MARGAO: To transport the collected garbage effectively, the Margao Municipal Council on Friday commissioned two compactor trucks. The vehicles will be used collect only wet waste. And three trucks and six rickshaws will also be added to the fleet shortly.
MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Angle Prabhudessai said that the two compactors have been purchased with funds received under the 14th Finance Commission. “Each compactor cost Rs 28 lakh and they will be used only to collect wet waste,” she said.
“These compactors are fitted with a tank so that the leachate will not seep on the road causing problems for motorists,” she said.
She disclosed that MMC has also purchased three trucks each costing Rs 12 lakh and they have been sent for chassis fitting which would cost Rs 2 lakh extra for each truck. Besides, the council has also ordered six rickshaws each costing Rs 7 lakh.
At the programme held to commission the compactors while Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai cut the ribbon, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat broke the coconut.
Speaking to media persons, Kamat said these trucks were needed by the council for a long time and stressed the need for their maintenance and suggested that they be washed at least every alternate day.
Emphasising that the compactors need regular maintenance, former MMC chairperson Arthur D’Silva said that due to lack of maintenance, of the five compactors purchased earlier, three have broken down.
