MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC), during its
anti-encroachment drive, cleared and confiscated over Rs 4 lakh worth of goods
from various parts of Margao, Fatorda and Borda in the last two weeks.
While the MMC has decided to make the clearance drive a
regular exercise, it does not have any warehouse to store the confiscated
goods. The goods, some of which are valuable and delicate, now lie in a
corridor of the MMC building, with only a door protecting them from theft or
damage.
“The MMC is now levying fines on the vendors and releasing
the goods,” said Y Tawde, MMC Chief Officer.
The MMC workers have already cleared several banners and
hoardings illegally put up across Margao. The anti-encroachment team, led by
market inspector Anil Shirodkar, removed another 90 banners put up during the
MMC elections.
