MARGAO: Following its failure to convince the people to segregate waste at source, Margao Municipal Council is now toying with the idea of outsourcing the door-to-door garbage collection so that segregated waste is collected.
Tenders to collect the waste have already been received and the technical and financial bids are to be opened shortly.
It is believed that the tender will be to the tune of nearly Rs one crore.
Presently, MMC is collecting the waste from each household and has employed over 100 staff, who is being supervised by five supervisors. Each day around 50 to 60 tonnes of both dry and wet waste is collected.
Unfortunately, the MMC staff collecting the waste from households does not segregate the waste, which is making the garbage management difficult. The waste then has to be segregated by the staff at Sonsoddo.
Margao Municipal Council chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai lamented the non-segregation of waste by the people and pointed out that the dry waste collected by students from 11 schools participating in a special programme of the council, is sent directly for baling.
