MMC cracks whip on illegal footpath vendors

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday cracked a whip on illegal vendors selling goods on the footpaths of Margao and seized goods worth thousands of rupees.

Lyndon Pereira, Chairperson MMC said, a team led by a market inspector went round the city and confiscated goods displayed on the footpaths and passages in the morning hours. “Many illegal vendors were found selling goods on the footpaths. MMC has seized goods from them worth thousands of rupees,” he said.

He said that such drive on encroachment, besides illegal vendors will continue in the coming days.

The New Market Traders Association had demanded action against all the vendors selling goods on the footpaths of the commercial city, and especially around the New Market area.

Traders had expressed frustration for no action from the MMC, upon which on Wednesday a drive was conducted. However, traders have alleged that there is an interference of the political leaders not to act against the illegal vendors.

It must be noted that illegal business on the footpaths has turned out to be a routine one, as MMC is hardly noticed taking action against the illegal vendors, despite several complaints from traders and citizens.

MMC had even failed to act on the illegal vendors selling goods just in front of the municipal building.

Sadekar lane, besides Old Station road, lane opposite to Lily Garment, etc are major areas where the illegal vendors are noticed selling goods without any hesitation.
