MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has started a special drive against garbage dumping and deployed special patrolling teams at different points, mostly along the boundaries of the civic body to nab and penalise violators. The (MMC) Chief Officer has deputed officers on special duty who keep a hawk’s eye on the area even at late nights to nab those dumping waste along the road side.
Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar stated that the MMC has collected Rs one lakh from those caught red handed while dumping waste by the roadside. It is pertinent to note that there are black spots at several places and especially at the borders where people keep dumping waste even when door-to door garbage is collected on a daily basis.
Upset with the nuisance, the civic body planned to start the special drive wherein officials have been deployed at the borders in the late night hours to nab the violators.
Recently, local councillor Mahesh Amonkar caught a person red-handed while dumping the waste at 2.30 am. “The vilolator was from Benaulim,” stated Amonkar.
Responding to the issue, the Chairperson said that this drive will continue. “Our officials have collected nearly Rs 1 lakh in the last few days from the violators.
Special officers have been deputed on duty and we have also noticed that dumping of waste along the road has reduced to a large extent ever since we are keeping a watch over the area,” he informed. Meanwhile, coconut shells continue to be eyesore at many places, mostly along the roadside.
