MARGAO: While permitting traditional stalls including “kadio-bodio” and dry fish at the Old Market venue, the Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday resolved not to permit furniture stalls alongside the roads on the occasion of the feast of Holy Spirit Church, Margao.
While resolving to shift furniture and garments stalls into the land acquired for the handicraft mall near the PDA market, the Civic body has further decided not to allow any stalls around the Old Market traffic junction.
At the Council meeting held on Tuesday, the City Fathers resolved that only stalls selling traditional items such as sweets and grams will be permitted in the old market area.
Chairperson Arthur D’Silva and other city fathers agreed that the traditional stalls ought to be located at the traditional venue so as not to spoil the festive mood.
However, they were unanimous in their opinion that furniture and garments should be shifted to the proposed handicraft mall site this year.
Chief Officer Deepali Naik said that no stall would be permitted on the footpaths this year, adding that the Civic body would provide sanitation facilities for the vendors and public alike. She said that an advance of Rs 500 would be taken from the vendors, which would be forfeited if they don’t take care of the waste.
The Chief Officer also warned the vendors that the Civic body would crack a whip by confiscating the furniture if they don’t vacate the place within the set time frame.
