MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has still not managed to find time to commission the new compactor trucks into service. For the last four days, the trucks are lying opposite the MMC while the garbage from various places gets picked in open tipper trucks.
The MMC has been suffering from an acute infrastructure deficiency as far as the garbage collection system is concerned.
For quite some time now the MMC has been using just two compactor trucks for the collection of all kinds of waste, wet mostly. The MMC has been having a bad time even if one of the trucks fails. However, now there is some relief expected with two more trucks having arrived.
But, everyone has been left wondering why they aren’t being commissioned into the service of picking garbage. They were supposed to be commissioned into services on Friday, a day after they arrived. However, the MMC has skipped Friday as well as Monday i.e. today for inaugurating the compactors.
Questions are being raised on whether it is something to do with the rebellion amongst the councillors of MMC. Sources in the council said that ruling councillors too have been in denial to attend the inaugural.
It may be recalled that these two compactor trucks have been bought with 14th Finance Commission funds, and have cost Rs 28 lakh each.
