MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday has resolved not to back track on its decision to implement the bio-metric finger scan readers for the municipal employees.
The civic body has further resolved to recruit new staff on contract basis in the event the civic employees strike work on the issue.
At the council meeting on Tuesday, the mood of the elected councillors was clearly in favour of implementing the bio-metric finger scan readers for the civic employees.
Chief Officer Deepali Naik later told newsmen that the civic body would not pay salaries to the employees if they don’t record their attendance on the finger scan readers. “The Council on Tuesday has given its nod to recruit workers on contract if the civic employees strike work for non-payment of salaries. We are firm on our stand that those who are not using the bio-metric finger scan readers are being treated as absent and will not be paid their salaries”, she said.
On the question of holding discussions with the employees union, the Chief Officer said it is for the Council to take a call on the issue.
When asked how the civic body can treat the employees as absent when they are reporting for duties almost every day, Ms Naik said “since they are not complying with the circular to use the bio metric finger scan readers, we treat them as absent. If they are resorting to Gandhigiri or other modes, it will not make any difference to us”.
Meanwhile, the Council has approved a proposal to engaged workers in each of the 20 wards to assess the households not paying taxes to the Civic body.
The Council further resolved to change the colour of the uniform for various categories of workers.
