MMC grapples with disposal of inert, RDF piling up at Sonsoddo plant

MARGAO: With the monsoon season barely three months away, the Margao Municipal Council is staring at the uphill task of getting rid of the huge quantity of inert, which will be produced after the bioremediation of legacy dump.

Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of the civic body, said they have already started executing a plan and a detailed action plan will be drawn up very soon.

Levinson Martins, Managing Director of Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has also called for a meeting to discuss the issue on March 20.

The conditions at the Sonsoddo dump yard are becoming worse as the waste generated on a daily basis is not being treated; besides, the civic body is facing a tough time tackling the wet waste piling up at the site.

The civic body is also in a fix pertaining to disposal of the RDF that has been generated from the bioremediation of the legacy dump, which needs to be transported either to a cement factory or be used for land filling.

“The civic body is serious about the issue, we will see to it that the inert is shifted from the site before the monsoon,” said Shirodkar, when contacted.

“I am personally monitoring the day-to-day work at Sonsoddo, and the work pertaining to construction of a tank to store the leachate has also commenced. In the last few days, our workers have cleaned up the area outside the old treatment plant,” he informed.

He said that a team of engineers has been asked to attend the meeting called by the GWMC on March 20 to discuss the issue in detail.
