MARGAO: Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) on Sunday charged that the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) continues to
be groping in the dark with absolutely no evidence of successful waste management.
“The fire incident at the old fish market is yet another example of the miserable failure of the Council which boasts about having the support of the double engine sarkar through its mentor, the MLA of Margao Digambar Kamat,” said SCM Convener Savio Coutinho.
“The Council has of late been pleading helplessness in managing the garden waste due to the High Court restrictions on the dumping of garden waste/green waste near the KTC Bus stand. It was necessary for the Council to either identify or arrange for alternate land for dumping of the green waste or should have sought time from the High court to identify alternate land. However, the Council accepted the structure’s and are sitting over the same till date,” SCM members added.
“All over the city there are at least 50 locations where one can see huge heaps of coconut husks and shells, and if you ask the Council authorities, they have absolutely no clue whatsoever about how they handle the same,” Coutinho lamented.
SCM recalled that in 2019, they had suggested that the Council procure garden waste shredding machines, and that it took the Council four long years to purchase one, and that too is not running as expected.
“We as citizens appeal to the High Court to view the waste management system of Margao seriously, and not to give in to the fairy tales presented before the Hon’ble court, ” he said further. One and a half crore is being spent on waste management every month by the Council, yet not even the Hon’ble High court is aware whether a single kilogram of compost is derived from the so-called treatment of waste by the Council,” Coutinho added.
