MMC identifies private land to house stray dogs

MARGAO: At the time when the issue of stray dog menace remains unresolved in absence of no proper mechanism in place, Margao Municipal Council has initiated a process of identifying a private land to deal with the problem.

After an offer from one of the citizens from Curtorim, having a land best suitable for the dog shelter, the civic body thought positively to finalize the deal at the earliest.

The property comprises of 2,000 square meters, has all the required provisions including a huge compound wall and is away from the residential area. The owners of the property have willingly agreed to offer the service to the Margao Municipal Council in order to deal with the stray dog menace that has been causing major headaches to the general public.

It is pertinent to note that a few days ago, a group of frustrated Margao citizens threatened to leave stray puppies at the doorstep of the Municipal Council for the city fathers to foster, in a bid to spur the civic body into releasing the funds required for the animal birth control programme and to support the dog shelter located near Sonsodo dump yard.

Citizens had even slammed the council for failing to settle its dues with the NGO running the dog shelter at Sonsodo, for nearly three years, since January 2021.

Presently, the situation pertaining to the stray dog has resulted in danger to the citizens as numerous incidents have been reported wherein small children are being attacked by packs of dogs.

Speaking to O Heraldo, Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of MMC said that they are in process of finalizing the deal with the owner of private property at Curtorim for a dog shelter.

“The owner of the property is already sheltering stray dogs and has now agreed to offer his land on lease to the civic body,” he informed.

He further said that very soon, a proposal will be moved with the government in this regard and the final decision will be taken after approval from the council.
