MMC invokes law to minimise plastic bag use

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council has decided to minimize plastic use in the town and invoking the prevailing laws has issued a notice warning people that they are liable to be fined Rs 5,000 every time they are found violating the law.
In a notice signed by MMC Chairperson Babita Prabhudessai and Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes, the council has invoked provisions of the Plastic Waste (management and Handling) Rules 2016 and also the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act.
The notice points out that under Rule 15 of the Plastic Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, any person who intends to sell or give any plastic bag beyond 50 microns should register themselves with the council and hence urged people to register with the council by paying a registration fee of Rs 48,000 per annum.
The notice further points out that nobody, including traders, shopkeepers, street vendors, fish/chicken/mutton vendors, bread vendors and any other business establishments, will be able to give plastic bags to their customers from April 1.
Invoking Section 8 of the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act the council warned violators that they will be fined Rs. 5000 per offence. Further use of plastic below 50 microns is totally banned in the town.
