MARGAO: Around 98 commercial establishments located in the jurisdiction of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), which have been classified as bulk generators of waste have received notices from the civic body about the recovery of costs associated with bringing their waste to the municipality for processing. The Model Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling Bye-Laws 2020) was the subject of the notices. As per the estimates, MMC officials hope to recover more than Rs one crore from these bulk waste generators.
According to officials, bulk waste generators are required to pay Rs eight for every kilogram of waste generated, with options to set up
composting or bio-methanatioAZAZn units or partner with operators for a common facility.
Those unable to do so must pay prescribed fees. As per the rules, ‘Bulk Waste Generator’ includes various establishments exceeding specified waste generation rates. Permission from the council is necessary for installing waste processing units like bio-methanation or composting systems.
These units aim to process and treat organic waste generated on-site. Compliance with these regulations is crucial for entities falling under the definition of bulk waste generators, which encompasses a wide range of establishments from residential to commercial, educational, healthcare, and recreational facilities. The regulations prioritize waste management strategies such as composting and bio-methanation to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable waste disposal practices.
