MMC launch the de-weeding work of Maimollem Lake to prevent flooding during monsoons

The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) launched the pre-monsoon works by starting the de-weeding of the Maimollem Lake on Wednesday. Through this initiative, two water channels will be cleaned so that there are no blockages. This will help to prevent flooding of the lake during monsoons.

Led by members of the Mormugao Municipal Council and Vasco MLA, the de-weeding effort at Maimollem lake marks a significant preventive measure ahead of the monsoon season. The cleaning process, which includes opening and clearing two water channels, is expected to conclude by April, ensuring the lake is free from debris and obstructions.

MMC Chairperson Girish Borker emphasized the importance of proactive measures, particularly for low-lying areas like Ward no 16, which are susceptible to flooding. Borker encouraged residents to provide feedback during the cleaning process to address any additional areas requiring attention.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, MMC officials stated that the project, estimated at approximately Rs 1.70 crores, marks the first time such extensive de-weeding efforts have been undertaken at Maimollem Lake. The ongoing de-weeding activities will continue until the onset of monsoons, ensuring sustained effectiveness.

Vasco BJP Mandal President and councillor Deepak Naik lauded the timely initiation of pre-monsoon works, emphasizing the benefits for residents, particularly in areas like Baina. Naik commended MLA Krishna Salkar for prioritizing these essential pre-monsoon preparations, which will help mitigate waterlogging and flooding risks in the region.
