MARGAO: In a late night development, the Margao Municipal Council placed under suspension Market Inspector Mohan Arlekar for allegedly disobeying the chief officer’s order to keep the footpaths along the old market area from encroachments.
Arlekar, however, expressed shock over the suspension order, saying that the chief officer’s order on encroachments was scheduled to come into effect only from May 19. The suspension order was issued at around 10.30 pm on Saturday night and was served on the market inspector only at around 11.30 pm last night.
Chief Officer Deepali Naik told Herald that the market inspector was placed under suspension for disobeying her order to keep the old markets footpaths free from encroachments. She said the Municipality meant business this time round during the seven days fair period. The Chief Officer has handed over the charge to Market inspector Seema Godghe.
Meanwhile, Arlekar told Herald that he was shocked over the suspension order issued by the chief officer. “I had initiated action against the stalls erected within a radius of 20 meters from the old market traffic junction. I fail to understand how the Chief Officer could issue the suspension when the order has not come into effect,” Arlekar wondered.
