MARGAO: Post March 11, a new government will take charge of the state and with it there is every possibility of a change in guard in the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) as the civic body is likely to get a new chairperson.
The 25-member Margao Municipal Council is currently headed by Babita Angle with Doris Texeira as the deputy chairperson.
Babita owes her allegiance to Vijai Sardesai and Doris is a Digambar Kamat loyalist.
Eleven councillors are backed by Vijai while five are supported by Digambar which gives them an edge over the opposition which has only 10 councillors.
However, some Vijai-backed councillors are not happy with Babita and want her replaced.
Babita, who is a practicing pathologist does make it a point to be in her office everyday for a certain period of time to attend to the works of the council.
However, this is not acceptable to some of the councillors who opine that the chairperson should be there for at least half a day if not at all times.
The situation is likely to change depending upon the election results. While everybody concedes that it will be a hung Assembly, there are chances of the Congress forming the government with the help of other parties and independents. And the best suited leader of the Congress to do so is perceived to be Digambar Kamat.
Thus if Digambar Kamat becomes the next chief minister of Goa, then Vijai Sardesai will have to buckle and accept a change in the Margao Municipal Council where Digambar’s choice is expected to be the new chairperson.
However, Angle was not available for comments as she is currently on leave having left for a holiday overseas.
Doris Texeira who is the acting chairperson preferred not to comment on the matter and instead pointed out that Babita has improved the revenue collections of the council by focusing on recovery of taxes.
