MARGAO: A special meeting of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) scheduled on Monday to discuss the further actions with regard to the Sonsoddo plant and re-building the collapsed wall has been cancelled due to the swearing-in ceremony of the new government.
However, the Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) has assured their help to the civic body to remove the waste from the old plant.
On the other hand, Levinson Martins, director of GSWMC also visited the Sonsoddo dump yard on Saturday evening and took stock of the matter, besides alerted the MMC not to take the issue lightly. He also assured help from the GSWMC in order to remove the waste from the old plant.
“As assured by the GSWMC, the wet waste from the old plant will be removed and it will be dumped on the legacy waste temporarily. They will carry out the work with the agency appointed by the Corporation,” Martins said.
MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira said, “It won’t be possible to hold the special council meeting on Monday as scheduled to discuss the issue due to the swearing-in ceremony of the new government on Monday.”
Reportedly, on Saturday around 1,200 metric tonnes of waste got spilled over after the wall of the plant collapsed.
“We are very much serious towards resolving the issue of the Sonsoddo dump. I will also have a word with the officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board with regard to the permission to transport 10 tonnes of waste from Margao to Saligao Waste Treatment Plant,” the Chairperson said.
However, it has been observed that there is risk of more damage to the old treatment plant, if the waste is not removed immediately, besides the life of the several workers engaged in baling the waste inside the plant is at risk.
The civic body has also decided to deploy one engineer of the municipality at the Sonsoddo site in order to keep an eye on the plant, so that no more damage is done to the plant.
