MARGAO: In order to resolve the burning issue of traffic in the commercial capital, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to deliberate on implementing the pay parking scheme in the next general council meeting which will be held on October 28.
Margao Traffic Cell has already moved a proposal in this regard before the MMC listing several places to be identified as the pay parking slots.
Speaking to Herald MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira said that the civic body has received a proposal from the Margao Traffic Cell stressing upon the burning issue of traffic and to implement a pay parking scheme in the town.
“Traffic problem is one of the long pending issues of Margao, and the problem has raised its head further in recent years. We need to get rid of this problem at the earliest. Civic body too feels that the pay parking can resolve the traffic problem to some extent,” he stated.
He further said that several shopkeepers, besides others, have been observed occupying some spots for the entire day, depriving others from the parking.
The chairperson said that council will deliberate on the proposal moved by the Traffic Cell and the appropriate resolution will be taken thereafter.
“We need to find out the solution to the traffic problem in Margao,” he added.
Margao Traffic Cell Police Inspector Gautam Salunke stated that occupying the area for the whole day by the owners of the vehicles has added more traffic problems in the town.
“There is an urgent need to implement the pay parking in the commercial town, as many owners of the vehicles will think twice before parking their vehicles for long hours once the pay parking is implemented. The civic body needs to take this issue seriously in order to resolve one of the burning issues of Margao,” he stated.
The PI said that they have listed several places to be identified as the pay parking slots, which include areas in and around municipal buildings.
“Pay parking scheme if completed in the right earnest will definitely solve the parking woes/problems considerably and free the main thoroughfares for smooth movement of vehicular traffic,” he stated.
Savio Coutinho, former chairperson said he firmly felt that the fees for parking should be minimal. The pay parking system will surely streamline the parking of vehicles.
