VASCO: The Opposition councilors in Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) have demanded vigilance inquiry into the whole procurement process under which faulty rickshaws (Tata ACE hoppers tippers) provided to the council by Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) but remained unused.
Opposition councilor Murari Bandekar told Herald that he was shocked to read the paper’s Thursday expose on faulty mini rickshaws provided by GSUDA to the MMC and all seven rickshaws later proved out to be faulty as the engines fitted in these rickshaws were unable to take the load and the same was recalled for engine replacement.
“Firstly, it is very disappointing to note that the GSUDA procured rickshaws turned out to be faulty and was left unused by the council. I feel that there might be some sort of scam in the whole procurement procedure, so, we demand a vigilance inquiry into procurement of rickshaws for councils,” Bandekar said.
He said that after reading the report on Herald, he found out that after the drivers of the vehicles reported that these rickshaws could not take the load of garbage and climb on hilly roads, the MMC stopped using these rickshaws, but kept the issue under wraps.
“Now as the issue has come to light, we from opposition camp have decided to take up the issue very aggressively in the forthcoming council meeting on March 14. We have also decided to formally file a complaint before the vigilance department,” he informed.
