MMC passes resolution to revoke NOC granted to GSL

The resolution was passed during the council meeting following a heated discussion by the councillors over the issue.

VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution to revoke the occupancy certificate granted to the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), Vasco.

The resolution was passed during the council meeting following a heated discussion by the councillors over the issue.

MMC chairperson Leo Rodrigues said that the Council had granted the NOC to the GSL after it received a letter from the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA), Panjim. He said that the matter was going on for the last three months and that the MMC had written a letter to the DMA since it had instructed them to give the occupancy/NOC to the GSL.

But the ward councillor Priya Raut opposed the decision and she was supported by most of the councillors resulting in passing a resolution to revoke the NOC. Councillor Raut demanded that the GSL must leave setback from the main road when they start the new construction work and complained that the GSL had not kept any setback. She said that it would create problems during road widening and demanded that the compound wall of the GSL be demolished.

Councillor Deepak Naik said that he will approach the court if the municipality fails to revoke the occupancy certificate. He said the construction licence was issued to the GSL on the condition that it will construct the compound by leaving enough setbacks for road widening.
