MARGAO: The demolition squad of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Thursday razed an  encroachment on municipal land at Mungul.
The extension of the restaurant at Mungul deemed as illegal was cleared by the squad following the order issued by the MMC Chief Officer.   The MMC action follows the complaint from a Mugul resident, terming it as illegal. The restaurant had laid interlocking pavers in front and had carried out works in the open space gifted to MMC. The restaurant owner Darren Fernandes alleged that he was not served a demolition notice.  “I don’t want to blame the MMC but I am puzzled as to who passed the order,” Darren added.
The Chief Officer informed that the restaurant was earlier served notices and recently too and that the demolition is in accordance with the MMC rules.
Meanwhile, the structure of former chairperson Gonzago Rebello, which has been deemed as illegal still stands tall in the road widening area at Mungul even after all the illegal structures along this route were demolished.
The chief officer informed that the matter regarding the former chairperson’s structure is in the deputy collector’s court and that the PWD is the custodian of the land and whatever action is to be taken, has to start from their end.
