MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) with the help of an earthmover on Wednesday demolished the old building, which once housed the old office of Civil Registrar-Cum-Sub-Registrar at Feira-Alta, Mapusa.
MMC chairperson Ryan Braganza informed that the demolition cost incurred by the civic body would be recovered from the owner of the private property.
“The building was unsafe and notices were sent to the owner. They had a choice to repair it but since a portion of it collapsed we had no option but to demolish it. There are few more buildings that are dangerous and unsafe within the jurisdiction of the Mapusa municipality. After this incident we will be more vigilant and look into other structures. We spent around Rs 2 lakh to raze down this entire building, which collapsed on Sunday night,” Ryan informed.
It may be recalled that a portion of this old building situated opposite the old Municipal building collapsed on Sunday night due to the incessant rains. However, nobody was injured in the incident.
