On Wednesday, the Margao civic body generated nearly Rs 52 lakh including Rs 45 lakh from a mega mart

MARGAO: During its special drive, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) recovered nearly Rs 1 crore from the defaulters as dues with regards to house tax, signboards, and trade tax within 10 days.

On Wednesday, MMC generated nearly Rs 52 lakh, including Rs 45 lakh from a mega mart. Chairperson Lyndon Pereira and Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes have accorded top priority to generate revenue for the civic body by recovering the dues from the defaulters.

It is pertinent to note that crore of rupees are yet to be recovered from the defaulters in Margao. MMC had issued notices to all the defaulters to clear their outstanding dues immediately.

In a warning to defaulters, the MMC administration has reiterated that the municipality reserves the right to take all legal actions including cancellation/suspension of lease agreements and sealing of premises.

MMC Chief Officer had said there are several defaulters who have not paid their dues for years. Hence, this is a reminder failing which MMC will be forced to take a harsh decision. Many residents are very sincere in making payments but a few need reminders. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, individual notices cannot be served. Defaulters may consider this as the only intimation.

Chairperson Lyndon said there are present and past dues with regards to house tax, signboards, and trade tax.

“Since last ten days MMC had initiated a special drive to collect the dues from the defaulters, and as of June 30 nearly Rs 1 crore has been recovered. It is a positive sign for the MMC with regard to generating revenue”, he said.

He informed that defaulters are coming forward to pay their dues.

The chairperson further informed that there are several banks and co-operative credit societies in the municipal jurisdiction which are yet to pay their dues.
