MMC resolves to ban plastic bags from Jan 26

After the bitter failure to make the Commercial Capital plastic free, the Margao Municipal Council body is now bracing up to ban use of plastic bags in the city from January 26, 2009.
The new Council headed by Chairperson Savio Coutinho has now resolved to implement the ban on use of plastic carry bags in the city from Republic Day next year.
Coutinho told Herald that the Civic body will issue a notification on December 19 to ban plastic carry bags from the Republic Day, 2009. The new resolve comes after the failure by the Civic body to implement the ban over the last one year.
He said the traders will be told to exhaust all the plastic carry bags in their stocks by January 26, 2009.
