MMC resolves to hike shop rent

MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday decided to increase the rent of its shops in the municipal area by 5 per cent annually.

In the council meeting, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari stated that the Administrator of Municipalities has permitted the municipal councils to increase the rental of their shops by 5 to 10 per cent annually.
Councillor Sudhir Kandolkar suggested that the rentals may be increased by 5 per cent annually. After discussions, MMC resolved to increase the rentals by 5 per cent with immediate effect.
Falari proposed to increase daily wages of the labourers to Rs 350 from the existing Rs 297 per day. “The financial position of the MMC is quite good and there is reserve of Rs 9 crore and hence MMC can afford to increase the daily wages of the labourers,” said Falari.
However, Councillor Advocate Subhash Narvekar said the labourers work up to 2 pm and there is no need to increase their wages if they are going to work for half day. “The wages are paid for full day and as such, if MMC wants to increase their wages to Rs 350, they should be directed to work for 8 hours,” Narvekar said.
After discussion, it was resolved to issue circular making it mandatory for the labourers to work in the morning and afternoon sessions.
The issue of development of Alankar theater into a commercial complex also came up for discussion.
