MARGAO: Gandhi Market vendors under the banner of Vegetable, Readymade & Cloth Vendors Association on Friday served a 15 day deadline on the Margao Municipal Council to clear encroachments from the roadside and public passages or face action.
Led by association leader Babu Azgaonkar, the vendors warned that they would be forced to take the law in their hands.
Azgaonkar drew attention of the memorandums submitted to the civic body in the past with a request to remove vendors sitting on road sides and passages, including the Sadekar lane, old Bank of Baroda, market road, Ropa Chawl, station road etc and to keep the Sulabh toilet in a hygienic condition free from overflowing septic tanks.
He, however, contended that no action was initiated by the civic body to clear the encroachments, while claiming that the civic body is only concentrating in the Margao Municipal New market and Gandhi Market.
MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva gave the delegation a patient hearing and promised to crack a whip against the roadside vendors from Monday. He told the delegation that MMC has accepted other demands including laying pavers in the Gandhi Market.
In fact, Arthur told the delegation that he would immediately hold an inspection of the Gandhi Market to take stock of the situation.
