MARGAO: The recovery of outstanding revenues of the Margao Municipal Council has slowed down to a major extent due to various reasons. The MMC is yet to recover over Rs 6 crore from all 15 wards due to which its revenues are hardly sufficient to meet the expenditure.
The MMC with its limited sources of revenue and ever increasing expenses has been in the red for quite some time. The A-Class municipality has attempted several methods to overcome revenue deficit and get the recoveries rolling. However, all these methods never gained traction.
Recently, the MMC had launched an aggressive drive to recover outstanding tax and managed to recover a substantial amount of the pending dues. However, as the year progressed and a new financial year started the outstanding dues kept increasing every passing day.
MMC sources say that the administration is unhappy with the performance of the recovery team, as such, mulling an overhaul of the team soon.
Presently, the outstanding tax arrears from all 15 wards are over Rs 6 crore, which includes house tax (Rs 3. 62 crore), rents from MMC properties (Rs 45 lakh), trade tax (Rs 55 lakh) and signboard licence fees (Rs 35 lakh).
On the brighter side, the MMC has collected over Rs 4 crore by way of garbage fees added to house and trade taxes.
