MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is confused in order to identify the land to dump the inert generated from the ongoing bio-remediation process at the Sonsoddo dump yard through the Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC).
MMC needs to find land to dump the inert, which is almost 1000 trucks, to some other place before the arrival of Monsoon. There are fears that all the inert will flow along with the rain water into the gutters and nullahs. The civic body is now engaging in joining hands with the private landowners requesting them to take away the inert for land filling. GSWMC commenced with the removal of dump piled inside the old treatment plant on Saturday.
GSWMC has come to rescue the Margao Municipality pertaining to the thousands of tonnes of legacy dump at the Sonsoddo. The bioremediation process has reduced the legacy dump to a large extent. However, the civic body is finding it difficult to dump the inert generated out of the bioremediation process.
Sources revealed GSWMC has asked the civic body to identify the land immediately.
Speaking to Herald Lyndon Pereira, Chairperson MMC said, “Good news is that legacy dump is getting reduced with the help of the GSWMC, but at the same time the civic body is finding it difficult to identify the land to dump that inert. Earlier, inert was used for the land filling at the property owned by the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited at Margao,” said Pereira.
Concerned about the inert dump, he said, “We have approached a few government departments and agencies to use this inert for the land filling. However, no positive response has resulted in problems. Now, we have even asked some private landowners the same.”
