MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council is still struggling to clear the damage caused by Cyclone Tauktae on Sunday and there are still calls being made to cut trees, which are threatening structures or to fall across the road and snap electricity wires.

While the MMC workers has cut practically all the trees that had fallen across the road or on the houses during the cyclone, they had kept the cut branches and trunks by the side of the road and that is where they continue to remain even today.

“We are still receiving calls asking us to cut trees and hence we have not been able to remove the trees that have already been cut,” admitted Agnelo Fernandes, MMC Chief Officer, who however pointed out that there is no blockage of road anywhere due to fallen trees.

At many places and particularly in Sirvodem the cut branches and trunks are lying where they were kept and at one place the owner of a car cannot move his vehicle as the cut trunks are kept right against the gate to his garage.

Meanwhile, the MMC has cleared the drains and storm water drains before the onset of monsoons. However, at some places, particularly in the new market area, the pavers have not been put back on the drains which are lying open.

“We do not have pavers to replace the damaged ones and that is why they are kept open at the moment and will be covered as soon as we get the pavers that have been ordered,” said Agnelo.

Meanwhile, in view of increasing COVID cases in Margao, the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Social Committee carried out a sanitation drive at Khareband. The sanitisation was an initiative of Deepak Kattimani, who is the committee president.
