MARGAO: The burning municipal market did not stop Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello and his fellow councillors from flying to Hyderabad on Tuesday noon on a junket to study sustained challenges on solid waste management.
Incidentally, this is perhaps the first time that both the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Margao civic body are out of station and will not be available for the general public during the next three days.
Independent legislator Vijai Sardesai was quick to slam the Margao civic body saying the city fathers chose to go on a junket to Hyderabad when the municipal market was burning. “There was a fire right in the backyard of the municipality, but the Margao councillors chose to go on a junket to Hyderabad”, Vijai told the media.
Chairperson Gonzaco, Vice-Chairperson Dadi Mayenkar and councillors Rosy Pereira, Avinash Shirodkar, Tito Cardozo and Damu Shirodkar had made their presence felt at the new market to take stock of the situation when fire engulfed the market.
Gonzaco along with the 11 councillors were conspicuous by their absence when the new market traders led by president Vinod Shirodkar along with Sardessai and former MLA Babu Azgaonkar marched to the Margao Municipal building and later directed their ire at the Chief Officer Narayan Sawant after they could not find the chairperson in his chamber.
