MARGAO, DEC 30
Thanks to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, the Margao Municipal Council has finally decided to act tough against stray cattle in the jurisdiction of the Civic body.
More than a fortnight after the chief minister issued instructions to the civic body to tackle the stray cattle menace head-on, MMC Chief Officer Prasanna Acharya on Thursday issued a public notice on Thursday cautioning cattle owners to take care of their animals.
Acharya warned that any cattle found straying on the roads or near the municipal garbage bins will be seized forthwith, impounded and detained or otherwise disposed off without any further notice.
“We have viewed the menace very seriously and treated as continuing nuisance by the Civic body”, Acharya stated in the notice.
He said the Civic body has placed plastic bins within the jurisdiction of the Civic body to facilitate proper storage and collection of the waste. “It has been observed that the cattle is being found straying on the streets due to negligence of their owners and that the cattle is feeding on the waste and filth dumped in the garbage bins. This has resulted in garbage being strewn all over, besides causing damage beyond repairs. It may also result in the spread of diseases and serious health hazard in the city”, the Chief Officer added.
Stray cattle has been haunting the citizens and motorists in recent years with the Civic body turning a blind eye to the menace despite having a cattle impounding squad.
