MMC to clear fruit vendors in port town

Vasco: The Mormugao Municipal Council Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar on Friday informed that the illegal fruit vendors who had propped up during the lockdown period in the port town will be cleared.

“I have given instructions to the municipal inspectors to take strict action on such illegal vendors who are sitting on the footpaths, roadsides and illegally selling fruits etc.

“It has been observed that whenever the municipal inspectors go to take action on such illegal vendors, the vendors tend to vacate the place for time being and again they come and sit there to do business. One thing can be done by the municipal inspectors that they can be strict on such illegal vendors. They can confiscate the commodities of such vendors and bring it to the municipality. It is the duty of the municipal inspectors to keep check on the market activities and they should do it on their own,” Sankhwalkar added.

Vasco-based social worker, Preetam Keluskar said,” I agree some of the vendors were sitting in the ward due to lockdown. But now, the markets are open and we are getting everything in the market. But sadly, we see all these illegal vendors are getting multiplied day by day and causing nuisance to the commuters as they sit on the dangerous spots even from Vasco to Chicalim Airport Road. If they are not removed today then they will fight for permanent space tomorrow with the MMC.”
