MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is all set to erect 150 kg biogas plants at three housing societies.
Moreover, although 13 housing societies had agreed to install the same, only seven have given their NOC while others are yet to submit the same.
The three societies where the plants will be established are Nalanda Apartments at Rawanfond, Pratibha Housing Society at Aquem and Good Earth at Dongorwado in Fatorda. MMC will install the plant costing around Rs 5 lakh each while the society will manage and maintain it.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes pointed out that the most important aspect of waste management is maintaining the system, once it is installed and commissioned. He added that MMC will ensure that the plants are operated properly by having a team of experts monitoring them.
He further explained that a decentralized approach will be adopted by MMC, in accordance to the central guidelines and municipal bye laws on waste management, in order to ensure that wet waste is by and large dealt with at the source itself.
He also stated that relevant technology will be provided to housing societies while adding that at present those available are biogas plants, organic waste converters which are mechanical composting like the one used at Navelim panchayat and drum composting.
Housing societies will have to submit a report every six months giving information like waste that was generated, waste that was treated, waste sent for recycling and other methods used to handle the generated waste.
While pointing out that segregation is the key to waste management, Fernandes said MMC will shortly ask the residents to segregate dry waste into different categories and give cash rewards to those complying with the new norms so that they get properly segregated waste that is easier to deal with.
The following societies have given their NOC to MMC to install biogas plants namely Leandra Heritage at Madel, Mahanagar at Madel , Asha at Madel, Scenic Acres at Chandrawaddo Zone, Sankat Nirwana at Fatorda and L & L Magnolia at Fatorda.
