PORVORIM: The Mapusa Municipal Council has decided spend about Rs 2 crores to install three Organic Waste Converters in the fish market, vegetable market yard and at Dattawadi.
Speaking to Herald, MMC Chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar stated one organic waste converter with a capacity of one-and-half tonnes will be installed in the fish market. “The work of erecting the shed has already commenced and the machinery required for it has arrived. The OWC will be operational before monsoon. The capacity of the remaining two OWCs which will be installed in the market yard and at Dattawadi, will be three tonnes each,” informed Kandolkar.
He further said that 15 tonnes of garbage is being generated everyday at Mapusa and most of it is generated in and around the municipal market area.
“Once these OWCs are installed, MMC will be able to treat some portion of the garbage. The High Court had also directed MMC to set up garbage treatment for the treatment of garbage in a scientific manner,” he said.
“MMC had acquired an area of about 30,000 square metres at Cuchelim to set up garbage treatment plant and the construction work of the compound wall around the acquired land is in progress,” added Kandolkar.
“As setting up of treatment plant will take a long time, MMC decided to install these organic waste converters to treat non-biodegradable garbage,” he said.
