VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), which had seven chairpersons from November 2010 to October 2015, will have only two people occupying the post for the next five years. Deepak Naik, who is the BJP Vasco president, will reportedly take over the reins first, followed by Krishna Salkar, who has been elected for the third straight time.
According to information, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and other senior party leaders held a closed-door meeting on Friday to decide on a suitable candidate for the chairperson’s post, for which Krishna and Deepak were forerunners.
It is almost certain that Naik will be sworn in as chairperson of the new council and will serve for the first two-and-a-half years, while Salkar will occupy the post for the rest of the council’s term.
The BJP has a clear majority in the council with 14 of its councillors elected. Three independents and Councillor Kritesh Gaunkar, who was elected with the backing of Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho, have already extended their support.
to the BJP. The new ruling panel is expected to have at least 20 councillors, while the opposition camp will have five or fewer councillors.
