MMC to hike vehicle lifting charges

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has lately resolved to revise and fix the vehicle lifting charges at Rs 300 per vehicle.
The issue was discussed at the meeting of MMC earlier this week wherein it was revealed that the MMC was spending more money on the laborers who were involved in picking vehicles parked wrongly, in ‘No Parking’ areas and abandoned vehicles. The MMC has discussed and resolved to change the earlier cost sharing with Traffic cell of Margao while expressing that it has to be self sustainable and for that has to be reconsidered now.
“We have appointed 6 workers plus drivers and an average cost of Rs 2,89,000 was incurred on the salaries for the last 6 months while the total expenditure was Rs 6 lakh at Rs 80 as vehicle lifting charges which hardly worked out any money for compensation,” said Chief Officer Johnson B Fernandes.
The MMC hence resolved to enhance the same charges to Rs 200 (lifting charges) and Rs 100 to Police making it Rs 300. “If we can earn Rs 10,000 per day at the rate of 300 per vehicle charge, we can make it a break even. We have to set targets and that is the option to not make losses,” said Chairperson Babita Angle.
The traffic and parking situation in Margao in the absence of the police picking up vehicles from ‘No parking’ areas, has gone out of hand and the worst affected area was that of market streets. However, the councillors have expressed their reservation over the same and have requested the MMC to convey to the police not to levy the cost increase on to the people of Margao and Fatorda as they claimed that there is no designated parking place in Margao that the people can rely on.
