MARGAO: On the first day of the garage sentinel scheme being implemented by the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), the civic body received 12 pictures of garbage dumping violations as per the scheme specifications. Out of these 12, the MMC found four photos, which qualify for penalties. These violations will now be tracked and sent challans.
The violators who were tracked will be issued challans under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Waste Act 1996 & rules framed there under.
Ironically, on day one of the scheme that attracted comments from the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA), MMC Chief Officer (CO) Siddhivinayak Naik was on leave on Thursday. Incidentally, the number registered as the complaint portal for Sentinel scheme is being held by the CO.
It was expected that the CO would delegate an official to take care of the helpline and process the photos received. “The Chief Officer was expected to hand the phone and delegate the duty to some responsible person of the MMC for smooth handling of these complaints,” said MMC acting chairperson, Tito Cardozo.
When Cardozo was asked to comment about the DMA’s statement on the scheme, he said that MMC had not received any official communication from the DMA regarding this till date. It is to be noted that the DMA has complained that they have not received any communication from the MMC about the scheme.
