MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Friday has taken a resolution to set up garbage treatment facility plant at Sonsoddo in order to tackle the menace of waste. However, the council could not able to identify the place for disposing of the inert of legacy waste of Sonsoddo.
On Friday, the MMC held a monthly meeting, which has been noted as the longest meeting in the civic body’s history. The meeting commenced at 10.30 am and ended at 6 in the evening. It was a 37 point agenda meeting chaired by Chairperson Lyndon Pereira. Several resolutions were passed by the council.
Discussing the point of taking a decision on the presentation and suggestion given by Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) with regard to setting up of the garbage treatment facility plant at Sonsoddo, all the 25 councillors passed a resolution supporting the plant.
Councillor Sadanand Naik stated that this issue of Sonsoddo waste needs to be resolved immediately.
“We have witnessed several agencies attempted to treat the garbage dumped at Sonsoddo. However, none has been succeeded. In the end, the people of surrounding areas suffer,” he stated.
Councillor Damodar Shirodkar said, “It is a sensitive issue and the civic body should take it seriously.
“We request that somebody from the technical section do the follow-up of the works. Take all three MLAs of concerned constituencies into consideration,” he stated.
He also suggested outsourcing of collection of door-to-door garbage collection.
Earlier, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes explained the issue to the civic body. Councillor Francis Nunes requested to find out a solution with regard to the black spot, as they are creating a burden on Sonsoddo.
One of the engineers informed the councillors that the council have drafted one proposal with regard to the above-mentioned project and tendering will be done once it is finalised.
It may be noted that the MMC is facing a tough time with regard to the waste generated on the daily basis from the commercial town, as they are short of space at Sonsoddo to dump it. Recently, the GSWMC had suggested several ways in order to resolve the issue.
However, the civic body on Friday could not able to finalise the place for disposal of inert from Sonsoddo of legacy waste. Chairperson has requested the council members to identify and suggest the same. It was the GSWMC who requested the council to do so.
Even Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes came under fire from the Damodar with regard to the order of increasing the salary of selective workers.
Amongst the several other resolutions taken by the MMC, it has been decided to approve the revised estimate of the multi-storage parking project at Old fish Market for tendering the same. Council has decided to utilise the money from 14th Finance for the parking project.
