MARGAO: It has been revealed that South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has failed to pay Rs 1.12 crore to the Margao Municipal Council towards the fee of garbage collection for the last several years, and hence the civic body has decided to stop the collection of waste from the markets owned by SGPDA.

Chairperson Lyndon Pereira brought this issue to the notice of the councillors, and it was later explained by Viraj Arabekar, Sanitary Inspector. Upon which almost all the councillors expressed shock and demanded to take strict action.

As discussed in the meeting, MMC has been engaged in collecting the waste generated in the markets owned by the SGPDA since 2001. Several tonnes of waste are lifted on a daily basis, and as per the guidelines they need to pay to the MMC. The waste generated is of chicken, mutton, and fish cleaning, besides fish cutting and also vegetable, fruit waste.

The rate which was imposed for collection of waste was Rs. 61,150 per trip, in the year 2001 and the same has been revised and made applicable for 2014-15 is Rs 550 trip per day, which is as per the calculation of the expenditure incurred for the collection of the waste from the SGPDA markets.

At the moment an amount of Rs. 1, 12, 14,500 is pending from SGPDA towards garbage collection charges from the respective markets. SGPDA is a body governed by the government and has to pay the amount to the council, said the Sanitary Inspector at the meeting.
