MMC to use GPS to monitor location of staff, workers

MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to a GPS (global positioning system) based tracking system for the staff and labourers to monitor their location.
The renewal of shops/kiosks owners outside blood relation and the appointment of consultant for traffic management were the other issues taken up at the municipal meeting on Friday.
The municipality has also decided to distribute approximately around 8000 plastic coated cloth bags on December 5 through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Earlier this year, after conducting several awareness programmes against the use of plastic, the municipality had finally banned plastic bags of over 40 micron thicknesses from April.
At the meeting, MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza informed the councillors that the civic body is associating with the Bharat Scouts and Guides to distribute the bags to residents of Mapusa.
“The MMC has received support from Axis Bank, State Bank of India and Syndicate Bank to purchase these plastic coated cloth bags. The bags are washable with a life span of around six to eight months. A total of 800 children along with the councillors will distribute the bags to the households in the town on Wednesday,” Braganza said.
Chief Officer Clen Madeira informed that identity cards would be provided to every employee which will record the name of the person entering the municipality and this would be done through GPS enabled devices.
“With the implementation of this facility, there will be accountability among the staff and labourers,” the chief officer said.
Another Councillor, Rajsingh Rane questioned the assembly whether the biometric system is helping the MMC. He pointed out that this system should be implemented for all the employees to which the Chief Officer agreed.
