MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday held a meeting to discuss the assault on Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar during an MMC meeting on Friday. The MMC workers union demanded the immediate arrest of the three accused named in Arabekar’s complaint. However, after a request from the MMC, the union postponed its pen down strike to July 14. Both parties also decided to take measures to prevent such acts from being repeated.
The Goa Municipal Employees Association (GMEA), in a letter to the MMC, protested the assault and the inaction of the chief officer and chairperson in keeping negative forces at bay. MMC
Chairperson Arthur D’Silva said, “I will write a letter to the police, director of municipal administration, urban development minister and chief minister demanding stern action against the three accused. We have also decided to appoint a strong lawyer.”
GMEA President Anil Shirodkar condemned the MMC and police for allowing the civilians to climb on the dais and bang the tables in the MMC meeting hall.
