MARGAO: Facing a tough task to resume lifting and dumping the garbage at Sonsoddo due to space constraints, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Tuesday pressed into service machinery to make way for the trucks in dumping the collected waste from its jurisdiction.
It is pertinent to note that the waste lay unattended since Monday morning at several places, besides several garbage-laden trucks were found parked in the MMC garage at the Old Market. The garbage treatment plant at Sonsoddo is choked with waste besides this the road leading to the plant too is in a mess. On Monday, several garbage-laden trucks had to return due to space constraints at Sonsoddo.
As a result, the waste from the hotels and markets remained uncollected on Monday evening. On Tuesday morning, garbage got piled up at several places in the commercial capital.
The MMC managed to arrange some machinery on Tuesday to make way for the trucks at Sonsoddo, however, the efforts were not enough to resolve the issue.
MMC chairperson Lyndon Pereira informed that the civic body is trying hard to resolve the issue.
“I enquired with the officers and was informed that issue is partially resolved. The machinery was arranged to make way for the garbage-laden trucks to the waste treatment plant, besides creating more space by pushing the waste”, he stated.
Meanwhile, members of Shadow Council for Margao visited Sonsoddo and urged the MMC to take serious note of the issue, which may lead to disaster if not resolved immediately.
Addressing media persons, SCM convenor Savio Coutinho said they are ready to help the MMC in monitoring the work at Sonsoddo.
