MMC workers demand release of bonus, uniform allowance

Threaten to strike; CO says civic body cannot afford due to shortage of funds; Salary more important, says chairperson

MARGAO: Frustrated workers of Margao Municipality along with Union leader Anil Shirodkar on Wednesday marched into the cabin chairperson and Chief Officer to demand earlier release of Diwali bonus and uniform allowance. Workers have even threatened the civic body of strike.

Anil Shirodkar, general secretary, All Goa Municipal Employees Union (AGMEU) along with all the workers met Lyndon Pereira, chairperson and Agnelo Fernandes, Chief Officer MMC and demanded to release the Diwali bonus and uniform allowances.

They countered the chairperson and Chief Officer over the issue and charged them of harassment by not releasing their rightful bonus and uniform allowances. However, the Chief Officer clearly stated that the civic body cannot afford to release the bonus and other allowances due to shortage of funds, upon which the Union leader expressed anger.

Speaking to the media Anil Shirodkar said that it is the right of the workers to get the Diwali bonus, besides uniform allowance.

“Our demand is that the civic body should release the dues at the earliest. They have to give it. We will take a future course of action if not released in the next two days of time”, he stated. He even threatened to strike over the issue.

The chairperson said that the civic body is struggling to pay the monthly salaries of the workers.

“Salary is more important than the bonus and uniform allowance. And hence, the workers also need to understand the situations the civic body is facing for the last few months”, he stated.
