VASCO: The year-long celebration of the Mormugao Municipal Council (Camara De Municipal Mormugao) began with fervour and excitement on Sunday.
Food stalls made the town lively and the voice of Lorna echoed the town setting the mood for the year-long celebration.
Urban Development Minister, Milind Naik, was the chief guest for the occasion and Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and Panchayat & Protocol Minister Mauvin Godinho were the guests of honour. A foot rally by women of various self help groups and others marked the beginning of the celebration followed by the felicitation of renowned squash player Yash Fadte, footballer Derrick Pereira, Technical Director of FC Goa and MMC Councillors Saifullah Khan, Lavina D’souza, Pascoal D’Souza and Krishna Daji Salkar, for winning the election for three consecutive terms.
Milind Naik said, “If a town like Vasco and Mormugao which has an airport, seaport and railway and has the potential of competing with Panjim city doesn’t improve to our expectations then it will be the Councillors and myself who will have to have to take the blame. We will together make Vasco a model town for the generations to come.”
The Chairperson of MMC, Kritesh Naik Gaunkar, took the opportunity to reach out to the people of the town urging them to respond to the door-to-door garbage collection facility begun by the MMC. “I urge everyone not to dump garbage in the open and make sure that it is given to the collection agents. This will help in reduction of the garbage at Sada dump and further solve a major problem of Vasco town.”
Mauvin Godinho  called on the MMC to introspect on how far and how good the MMC has got for the last 100 years of the Camara. “It is not what the MMC will give us but we should think of what we can give to the MMC in our ways,” said Godinho urging Milind Naik to help in getting work of the Vaddem Lake completed.
