Mobile tower: Colva villagers ask panchayat to move court

Sarpanch says the body will take legal opinion before moving a petition

MARGAO: The villagers of fourth ward Colva have made their intentions clear that they will not tolerate the mobile tower in their crowded locality, and have demanded that the village panchayat Colva move the high court with regard to the same, as a special Gram Sabha meeting was held on Sunday.

The villagers have also expressed anger against the telecommunication company for pushing their way for erecting of the mobile tower, despite strong objections. They have warned that the ongoing work of the tower should be stopped immediately. Villagers say that the said tower may be shifted to some other area, having less population.

This Gram Sabha was called by the panchayat only to discuss the issue pertaining to the mobile tower, and the meeting was chaired by Johnson Coelho, Sarpanch of Village panchayat Colva.

Speaking to the media the Sarpanch said that the panchayat will take a legal opinion before moving a petition before the high court to oppose the mobile tower.

“Gram Sabha members have strongly opposed the tower and urged the body to initiate legal action”, Coelho said.

It may be recalled that the villagers had already objected to the mobile tower and they had even urged the district collector to verify the ground reality before giving police protection to the telecommunication company to carry out the works.
