Mobile tower planned in the middle of the road, locals cry foul

MARGAO: The locals of Navelim held a protest opposing the site that has been chosen for erecting a mobile tower, which is in the middle of the National Highway 66 on the Navelim bypass road, and say this will cause accidents in the future.

The locals pointed out that there have already been accidents at other junctions of the highway and that a tower is being built at another busy junction. Bento Da Silva showed that the law prohibits the erection of towers at places where traffic is hindered. He said when they approached the PWD, they were told to take the matter up in the courts. Da Silva added that the locals will take such a legal recourse if their demand is not met.

He also criticised the authorities for earlier lying to them about the location of the site and how they had to find out the correct location via an RTI application. They urged the authorities to put the tower in an open space instead. Da Silva said there is a residential colony too, nearby, that will get affected.
