PANJIM: Dr Shekhar Salkar, President of Gokarna Oncology Association (GOA), on Saturday, said that mobile towers do not cause any health hazard or any kind of cell damage to the human body.
Addressing a press conference, Dr Salkar said there is no scientific data and no convincing evidence that mobile towers cause health hazards.
He said that even the World Health Organisation (WHO) has concluded that current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electromagnetic fields, including children.
WHO recommends adoption of International Commission Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines and states that these guidelines offer protection against all identified hazards of RF energy with large margins, he added.
He said that researchers around the world, like Health Protection Agency and WHO, have said that there is no convincing evidence to prove it causes cell damage or any other health hazard.
Asked whether it is safe to live near a mobile tower, he said the levels of RF exposure from base stations and wireless networks are so low that the temperature increase is insignificant and does not affect human health. He added that pregnant women should not worry about the EMF radiation from mobile towers.
He said GOA will visit 18 gram sabhas in the State to create awareness that mobile towers do not cause any health hazards to the human body.
