MARGAO: Major traffic jams were reported in Fatorda and across Salcete on Wednesday evening, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit for the National Games inauguration at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday evening.
Traffic police were conducting a mock drill at the Old Market Margao-Colva Circle; the roads around the stadium were closed for traffic on Wednesday evening.
On account of this, all traffic was diverted to the alternate roads, but due to lack of traffic discipline amongst some commuters and the volume of vehicles on these roads, caused traffic jams in Fatorda, Agali, Gogol, Borda and nearby areas.
Traffic jams were also reported on the National Highway 66, starting from the Nuvem bypass, the Margao-Verna highway and even in Cortalim under the bridge including for traffic heading from Panjim to Margao.
Bus passengers in particular faced hardship as vehicles, which were stranded, moved at a snail’s pace for several hours from late evening till night.
Traffic Police were posted along the highway and even in the town.
