The ambitious project constructed by the Water Resources Department in the Madel ward of Bhati Panchayat in Sanguem is waiting for the desired boost and promotion by the department to attract tourists.
The project could be a major hub for tourist attraction in Sanguem after the Botanical Garden at Selaulim Dam and Savari Waterfalls in Neturlim. However, the project lacks basic infrastructure and is yet to be formally inaugurated.
With the concrete structure being ready on all fronts, the Water Resources Department’s “Model Beach” project has been attracting a large number of foreign and domestic tourists since its completion around a year ago.
The walking track, seating benches and work of installation of designer lights have been completed but the project remains to be inaugurated.
The project is located at a distance of about a km from the main road proceeding to Bhati at Valkini Colony No 1. The visitors need to commute along an six-metre wide road from Valkini Colony No 1 to reach project.
Bhati panch Manoj Paryekar said the project is a boon for adventure tourism but lamented the lack of desired infrastructure at the site.
Located on the banks of Selaulim backwaters, a canteen facility, children park and rest room are a must.
Though the department has come up with garden facility, which is interspersed with fruit bearing trees, people visiting the Model Beach have to presently sit in the scorching sun due to small trees. Till the time the trees grow, the department should have planted some additional ornamental trees to provide shade to the visitors.
The project lacks play area for the children and lawns.
Paryekar informed that the site offers a scintillating view during the monsoon and even during the summer, especially in the evening. The project offers a clear view of the Selaulim backwaters and of the island located few metres away. The department could have also developed the island with a hotel and boating facilities in the back waters, said a local. The internal road leading to the project needs to widened, as it is in a dilapidated condition.
