PANJIM: BJP on Thursday confidently asserted that its government would be able to rule the State without mining revenue, which has dipped by almost 65 per cent this year, due to halt in mining operations.

BJP spokesman Dr Wilfred Mesquita said that the state government can manage without the revenue earned from mining activity, provided certain expenditure is curtailed.

“If you have money you can afford luxuries, if not then you have to live within your means. If is better to live within your means, rather than depending on such money,” Mesquita stated.

Government, which is currently in the process of drafting Budget 2013-14, has to forego revenue to the tune of Rs 1000 crore which was expected to come in from royalty on iron ore exports. With the 65 per cent dip in mining revenue, state has managed to earn only Rs 350 crore revenue for the financial year 2013-14.

Meanwhile, Mesquita said that legal mining in the state should be started at the earliest.” “If Shah Commission has pointed out some illegalities then they should be corrected,” he stated.
